About Wireless HotSpot

What is HotSpot?

HotSpot is a wireless connection to the Internet that you can receive at the specific physical location (or a spot) that is wired to transmit wireless signal...

Yes, 'wired'. Every Hotspot is connected via T1 wire to the broadband network. It gets wired internet connection at the T1 speed of 1.5 Mbps/sec and then converts it into a wireless signal using a wireless Access Point or a router. The Access Point usually transmits at 11 Mbps/sec and is 802.11b standard compliant.

If your laptop is configured to receive a wireless signal at 802.11b or a backward-comparable 802.11g standard, it'll spot the wireless signal and connect you to the Internet...

The way the HotSpot works is often misunderstood... No, it is not a wireless connection to the internet via a signal coming from the Wireless tower, kind of like your cell phone gets. This service is different from HotSpot.

The wireless connection at the hotspot is a very 'local' connection that you can receive only when located near the wireless transmitter, within 150-300 feet radius. So, for example, if you chose to use a hotspot inside of Starbucks than you will only receive it inside of the shop or sometimes just outside of the door...

Any laptop can accept the signal as long as it has the 802.11b compliant wireless card installed or built-in and... as long as you've subscribed to the HotSpot service provider.

You can subscribe for Wireless HotSpot connection at T-Mobile. T-Mobile HotSpot is available in thousands of locations across the U.S. and Europe including airports, Starbucks coffeehouses, Borders Books & Music stores and Kinko's shops. T-Mobile predetermined locations allow for much greater data transfer speeds than on a cellular network. See if you can find a wireless hotspot near you...
