My laptop comparison gives you a side-by-side comparison by all important laptop characteristics and provides an overall score for each model. This score could be the most convincing piece of information for choosing the best deal. By the way, if you're not interested in brand new laptops than you may want to check my cheapest laptop comparison where I'm covering a few cheapest used models. The laptops presented in this laptop comparison are all base models, right out of the box, with no additional features selected. They are the cheapest models available from their manufacturers, all under a $1000, and they present great choice for internet browsing, word processing, emailing and other basic computing. How I decided on overall ScoreEach model was given an initial score of 0. For each compared option I calculated its average or a bottom line value, and then added 1 point for above average value or for above bottom value. Whenever all models have the same option value, they each get 0 points. So, for example Sony Vaio gets +1 point for the FireWire port, the other get 0. I also assumed that all models have the same reliability, and this could be a true statement today. Just what value you get for your money... as the price was also taken into consideration.
The results are not what I expected ... the out-of-the-box Toshiba Satellite A10 seems to be a winner. But with all my love to Dell (the laptop), I figured that for the total price of $90 I could add 10GB of hard drive and a CD-RW to match Toshiba, and still bit its price ... Hope this laptop comparison had helped you to make up your own opinion on how to review and compare laptops. Warning: prices and features were collected from the manufacturers websites in October 2003 and may have changed since then. If you came to this page in the later dates please verify yourself the current prices and features before making your decision. And remember, for an additional price, you can always add features to all of these base models. So don't get mislead by the IBM low score; IBM laptops are just more expensive in general.
