Best place to shop for discount laptops is at the manufacturer's own web site. For example, Sony, Dell, Toshiba, Gateway, HP and IBM all have refurbished sections on their sites - sometimes it is hidden and it's not advertised. Here they are:

Benefits of buying discount laptops from manufacturers

Discount laptops that you buy from manufacturers are not used laptops - they are returns, and practically brand new laptops that may have been used only a few days. Sometimes customers return laptops during the 30-day money-back return period because they didn't like the feel or the look or decided the notebook was too heavy to carry, and so on. After testing the machine, it may be resold online as a refurbished model.

Another important benefit of buying discount is that these laptops will be shipped immediately - there is no assembly time involved. Though, there are limited quantities available.

You can still return refurbished models. Dell offers 14-day money back for refurbished returns, IBM offers 7-day, while HP offers a 30-day return for both new and refurbished notebooks.

Warranties for refurbished laptops can be just as good, though they are usually of a shorter period. While IBM and HP offer 3-month standard warranties on their refurbished notebooks, refurbished Dell notebooks come with a 1-year limited warranty, just like the new ones. Most vendors, however, offer warranty upgrades at an additional cost for their refurbished models.

You don't need to worry about choosing specific parameters - refurbished laptops can't be customized... after all, most already got customized nicely by the original buyers.

Other Names for discount laptops

They often called remanufactured or recertified laptops. These names reflect best the process of becoming refurbished as manufacturers may first remanufacture laptops (disassemble and assemble back with some parts replaced) and then recertify (retest and sometimes reconfigure) them before putting them back on the market.

Should you worry about the refurbished quality?

If you buy from the manufacturers than you shouldn't - you'll get brand new laptops most of the times. You can always call and inquire about a particular item to find out what caused it to become refurbished or discount.
