Dell Inspiron 5100 - Overall Review

Why Dell Inspiron 5100?

I chose Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop for my home/office because of the perfect balance between performance and price. It is optimized for Wireless Internet, looks cool, has a large screen and upgradeable. With all that it is cheap and fast. To me, it is a practical desktop PC replacement that I can take anywhere.

The Inspiron 5100 is great for everyday Internet browsing, emailing and word processing. I also use my 5100 to watch DVD's, do some graphics design, web design, database programming and... playing games thanks to the ATI M-Radeon 7500 card. Burning a music CD takes about 10 min.

Pros: Desktop version of Intel P4, non-integrated graphics card, real quality 15" XGA display. Fast, stylish, and affordable. Solid construction. All latest ports including FireWire and 2 USB 2.0
Cons: On a heavy side, oversized DC adapter, 'Delete' & 'Insert' keys moved to the lower right, no option for built-in floppy drive.
The Bottom Line: If you're looking for an affordable laptop that is very well-built, nicely styled, includes all latest ports, provides speed, decent hard drive capacity, good video performance, and if you don't mind the weight than Dell Inspiron 5100 is hard to go wrong with.
Price paid: 1150 US$ (after $150 rebate)
Overall Rating: 5 out of 5
Recommended for: students, housewives, intermediate game players, home/office use, programmers

Inspiron 5100 is easy to setup

The setup I got is pretty much standard except that I added a built-in wireless NIC and a USB Memory Key. I also purchased Dell Wireless 2300 802.11b/g Broadband Router. The setting up was easy and seamless. In 5 minutes I was up and running Wireless Internet. I didn't even have to run any installation CD's - the wireless connection through Dell Router worked right out of the box...

I also bought an IBM Optical Scroll USB mouse that can operate on any surface. I don't like using the touchpad so I disabled it. The USB memory key works seamlessly with Windows XP, and I'm not crying for the floppy. The battery is quick to re-charge and lasts for 3 hours easy.

I have no concerns for Inspiron 5100 portability. My high school kid carries 3 times more of school books weight... I purchased Kensington's laptop backpack to carry it around,  and I am planning to give it to my son with the bag when he leaves to college.

Dell Tech Support..? I never needed to call them yet but I've heard it is a mixed bag...

I got a good deal with rebate, free shipping and free CD-RW/DVD combo promotion, and I am very pleased with my Dell's purchase... Here is my configuration for Dell Inspiron 5100.
