Every laptop user faces the same two questions when upgrading their laptop hard drive...

1.Can I install a non-Dell hard drive into a Dell laptop?

The answer is yes. But you have to buy your hard drive from a place where they maintain a database of all hard drives available on the market. This way you can make sure your hard drive will fit into your Dell laptop.

2. How do I transfer my existing data to my new drive?

Transferring data from your old hard drive to your new one probably seems like a big hassle. Well the truth is...it was! A quick, safe way to transfer your data to a new drive is covered in my page: hard drive cloning.

How do I go about installing my new hard drive?

Before you replace your old hard drive with a new one, you must first take out the old drive, put in the new one, and finally load the operating system and other files onto your new hard drive. Make sure you have a system booting disk.

Hard Drive Installation Instructions for the Dell Inspiron

1. Turn Notebook upside down
2. Hard drive compartment is located to the top left cornet of the Notebook
3. Remove the two (Phillips) screws that secure the hard drive
4. Slide the hard drive out of the compartment.
5. Slide the new drive into the notebook, making sure it is firmly connected.
6. Replace the two Philips screws that were removed.

Hard Drive Installation Instructions for the Dell Latitude

1. Turn the notebook upside down.
2. Locate the hard drive compartment on the right front corner of the Notebook.
3. Remove the two Phillips screws that secure the hard drive.
4. Slide the hard drive out of the compartment.
5. Slide the new drive into the notebook, making sure it is firmly connected.
6. Replace the two Philips screws that were removed.
