How to Clone Hard Drive

Call it the way you want it: hard drive cloning, hard drive copying or hard drive mirroring ... but the same question remains - when replacing your laptop hard drive, how do you transfer your existing data to your new drive? The hard drive cloning is the answer!

What is hard drive cloning?

The name speaks for itself - this process lets you create an exact replica of the file system from your old laptop hard drive on your new hard drive.

Why would you clone hard drive?

When I say replica, that means everything is going to be the same: your operating system, your booting files, your start-up directory, your display preferences, your registry, your desktop settings and your internet browser favorites, and of course, the entire file structure with all directories, installed software, history etc. To clone hard drive is like to copy & paste.

What will you need - System Requirements

- one available Type II PC Card (PCMCIA) Slot (or your NIC card slot - the same slot where you insert your 10/100 Ethernet or network card or a wireless card)

- your new hard drive (you don't have to buy a new hard drive from SimpleTech but it may be the safest way out, especially if you'll require some technical assistance from SimpleTech)

- Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000 and XP (FAT 16 and 32 ONLY)

- available for select Compaq, Dell, IBM, HP and Toshiba laptops. Before buying it you'll have to check for Device Compatibility.

How exactly does hard drive cloning using SimpleTech kit work?

It's safe and easy. This process is called "mirroring" because every byte of data is copied, including preference settings and invisible files.

Mirroring Kit includes a DriveLink PC Card and Cable, DriveLink EZ Connect Adapter and Twindisk HDD Mirroring Software.

Step-by-step Mirroring Process

1. Install the DriveLink PC Card into the PC Card slot on your laptop.

2. Connect the other end to the DriveLink EZ Connect Adapter.

3. Connect the Adapter to your new hard drive.

4. Insert the Twindisk mirroring software diskette in the floppy drive.

5. Turn on and boot up your laptop with this diskette.

6. Twindisk will automatically recognize old and new hard drives and will prompt you to begin the data mirroring process.

7. Twindisk transfers everything on your old hard drive to the new hard drive.

8. After the hard drive mirroring process is complete disconnect DriveLink.

9. Follow the hard drive installation guide and install the new hard drive. (If you bought SimpleTech drive then the EZ-Drive hard drive set-up diskette is included for the final step on installing the hard drive.

10. Reboot your computer and the hard drive cloning is complete!
