Centrino Laptops
What is Centrino?
Centrino is a shorter name for Centrino Mobil Technology from Intel
corp. ...or, in material terms, a series of several new electronic chips
and cards that are used in laptops. Intel claims that you as the laptop
user will see many benefits by getting a Centrino laptop...
What's included in the Centrino pack?
There are three things really - Intel Pentium M processor, Intel 855
chip set and Intel Pro/Wireless 2100 card. The Pentium M is your laptop
CPU (vs. Pentium 4 or Pentium 3), the 855 chip set is to support your
graphics memory, and the Pro/Wireless 2100 card is to connect your laptop
to a wireless network.
What does it take to become a Centrino laptop?
This is not a joke question... Intel is very clear about this naming
convention. If a laptop manufacturer made only two components available in
its laptops (the CPU and the 855 chip set) than they can only be called
Pentium M laptops. To call it the Centrino laptop all three components
including a wireless card must be present.
Benefits of Centrino technology
- Integrated wireless LAN capability:
- This simply means that
you'll have a wireless card built-in into your laptop. This would be
Intel Pro/Wireless 2100 card... There is nothing new about having a
wireless card built-in, especially that this card only supports 802.11b
wireless Wi-Fi standard and thus a transfer speed of 11 Mbps/sec max -
Dell, for example has its own built-in cards that support up to 54
Mbps/sec. So it is not really that good of the news... What's different
about this card is that it is a low power consumption card.
- Greater laptop performance:
- Again, Intel claims that a 1.7 GHz
laptop built on Pentium M processor will outperform a 2.6 GHz Pentium
4-M laptop... This outperforming means three main things: you'll be able
to run more programs on the background (basically more programs at the
same time without sacrificing CPU performance), your graphics will
display more details, your battery will last longer.
- Extended battery life:
- The new Pentium M processor will
distribute battery power intelligently... by giving more power to
programs that need it most and giving less to less computing-intensive
programs. Thus it will achieve lower average power consumption and
prolong your battery life.
- Thinner and lighter laptops:
- Here are many reasons how they can
do it... Intel is using their new chip packaging technology to make
Pentium M and 855 chip set smaller and thinner. The 'intelligent' chip
sets will run at a lower voltage, and thus create less heat meaning less
or no cooling fans. The lower average battery power consumption will
allow smaller battery size. ...All that together will enable laptops to
be thinner and lighter.
