SATA hard drives (or Serial ATA hard drives) deliver a transfer speed up to 150MB/sec. This performance makes them a choice for gaming systems and digital video editing. SATA hard drives are the fastest on the market, and have been known as internal drives only... until recently.
Yes, they do exist, the external
SATA Hard Drives... or to be more precise, you can easily make one using Addonics' Serial ATA Conversion
Kit - Mini
ExDrive. Mini ExDrive converts your internal 2.5"
(9mm high) IDE drive into an external SATA hard drive.
You simply place any 2.5" internal IDE
drive inside of Mini ExDrive enclosure, close it with the Addonics SATA
converter, and you're done.

Now, you can connect to any laptop via the Addonics CardBus/SATA adapter card >
To supply power, either an USB cable or an AC adapter that come with the Mini ExDrive can be used.
The fully assembled Mini ExDrive is sized either 5.12" x 2.95" x 0.52", and weighs about 6 oz, and can be easily carried around. Because of its size it only takes the 9mm high 2.5" internal IDE drives.
Now, here is the tricky part... Though the external SATA interface by itself can perform at 150 MB/sec, the converted parallel IDE (or ATA/133) drive that is inside is only capable of 133MB/sec, and this speed will be the actual speed of the Addonics' Mini ExDrive. But this difference is insignificant compared to the speed advantage over the USB 2.0 or FireWire 800 drives.
The capacity of this type of external SATA hard drives is limited to the capacity of the 2.5" IDE internal drives used in conversion.
Serial ATA hard drives are bootable, even with Windows XP: XP sees any SATA drive as an internal one, so you can boot off it.
The SATA hard drives have these benefits:
To learn more about the SATA technology, visit SATA official URL http://www.serialata.org/about/index.shtml
- SATA is a new interface technology defined by Intel Corporation
- SATA is backed by all major PC and Hard disk manufacturers
- SATA interface will gradually replace the old IDE (ATA133) interface
- Current SATA standard delivers 150 MBytes/sec (1.5 Gbits/sec) transfer rate, much faster than the latest IDE (or ATA133).
- The SATA transfer rate is expected to increase to 300 MB/sec in the near future.
- With a serial interface, SATA Hard Drives utilize thinner cables than the fastest parallel ATA drives.
